8 vehicles that DON’T qualify for road tax, according to the DVLA
So, as all UK vehicle drivers are aware, there is a vehicle tax that must be paid as well as other driving expenses. However, most drivers might not be aware that there are 8 vehicle exemptions from this tax.
Here’s the list below:
1. Vehicles used by a disabled person
Disabled drivers are exempt from road tax. This exemption is only valid with proof of disability.
About this, the DVLA states: "You can remove an exemption from a vehicle if it’s no longer being used by a disabled person. You can only use your exemption on one vehicle at a time. If you have more than one vehicle, you'll need to choose which one will be exempt from vehicle tax."
2. Vehicles used for a disabled passenger
Vehicles used to transport a disabled person or people, are exempt from road tax. The only exception for this rule is ambulances.
3. Vehicles used for mobility
Mobility vehicles are exempt from road tax as long as they are 8mph on the road or are designed to only run at 4mph.
4. Steam vehicles
Steam powered vehicles do not require road tax and are exempt.
5. Historic vehicles
Vehicles manufactured before the 1st of January 1985 are exempt from paying road tax.

6. Mowing machines
Vehicles that are only used to mow grass are exempt from paying road tax
(tractors that are used to tow gang mowers aren’t included).
7. Vehicles used for agriculture, horticulture & forestry
Tractors, agricultural engines, and light agricultural vehicles used off-road are all exempt from paying vehicle tax.
8. Electric heavy-duty goods vehicles
Electric heavy-duty good vehicles (that weigh over 3,500kg) are exempt from paying vehicle tax.
Previously, electric cars, vans, motorcycles and tricycles were also exempt from road tax.
However, this rule changed on April 1 this year. Hybrid electric vehicles are also required to pay tax. For more information and to check if you are exempt, visit gov.uk/vehicle-exempt-from-vehicle-tax.
